Spring Babies

Spring is here and that means fuzzy new spring babies on the homestead! BONUS: Watch the YouTube video to see the cuteness in action!

This week we introduced a new batch of chicks, turkeys, and some more pigs to the farm. Spring time is always a fun and cute time of year around here.

Spring BabiesIn our chick delivery, we have:
  • 40 Cornish Cross Meat Chicks- Straight Run (ie- not sexed)
  • 4 Production Red Pullets
  • 4 Americuana Pullets
  • 4 Black Australorp Pullets
  • 1 Bronze Turkey- Straight Run
  • 1 White Turkey- Straight Run

Turkeys?! Yes, we are diving into a new adventure this year! For the past couple years we raised ducks, trying both Rouen and Pekin. We did like raising ducks  and still have two hens, they have just joined the flock of chickens. Actually, we just really didn’t feel like butchering them (ducks are a pain in the butt to butcher)… haha. Watching them waddle around is fun too! This year though, we decided it was time to try raising turkeys. We couldn’t decide if we wanted to try bronze or white so we went with one of each.

We also brought home three pigs! It was supposed to be only two and they were supposed to be Old Spot pigs. We have three… crossbred. Its okay though- they are beautiful and our friend Greg from Marzahl Prospects (Endeavor, WI) gave us a great deal as always! So blessed to have such awesome friends!

The day Mike was went to get the pigs, he totally forgot the carrier he was to bring the pigs home in. He didn’t have time to run home before picking them up so he just rolled with it. How do you haul three pigs home in a sedan? The trunk. Pigs in the trunk of your car? Country much? Don’t worry, they didn’t have to travel far and the trunk isn’t air tight. I don’t suggest this route but in a pinch, it sufficed. Makes for a great story too!Spring Babies

Everyone is settling in and adapting well to their new homes. This coming week we will also be getting two nuc hives of bees! Our farm is booming! Be sure to subscribe to my new YouTube channel to see us introduce the bees to their hive. It is fascinating!

Go check out the YouTube video to see these homecomings in action!

Have a great day,

Melissa
